Duke University Marine Laboratory Spring 2013 Scholarships in Marine Science


The Duke University Marine Laboratory is pleased to offer scholarships for two non-Duke undergraduate students covering tuition & fees, room & board, books, travel to Beaufort, and full support for participation in a Beaufort Signature Travel Course to Costa Rica, Gulf of California, Puerto Rico or Singapore during a semester of study, Spring 2013 in Beaufort, North Carolina. Scholars will enroll in Duke courses taught in Beaufort, where there is emphasis on the biology and physiology of marine organisms, marine molecular biology, marine policy, and coastal socio-ecological issues. These scholarships will be available again in fall 2013 and spring 2014. 

To be eligible, an applicant must
  • be enrolled as a sophomore, junior, or senior in college in Fall 2012 (non-Duke)
  • be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa
Other factors considered in the evaluation process include whether an applicant
  •  identifies with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in marine science
  •  has demonstrated interest in marine science and its impact on society
  •  anticipates pursuing a Ph.D. in the marine sciences
  •  submits a compelling personal statement and strong letters of recommendation
Applications are due 14 September 2012. Recipients will be notified by 15 October 2012.
