This year’s competition will be even more exciting thanks to the generous support of Editors Richard Johnstone and Bill Sherrod of the Cooperative Living Magazine published by the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC).
Richard and Bill, so impressed with 2011-2012 entries during their first year as Virginia Outdoor Writers Association (VOWA) judges, are creating a new award of $100 and publication in Cooperative Living for the best essay written about an outdoor experience in Virginia.  The story for this Award must be set in Virginia and written about a traditional Virginia outdoor activity such as hunting, fishing, hiking, camping or similar pursuit.  A wonderful publishing credit opportunity for a young writer’s resume!
The “Cooperative Living Magazine Award” will be in addition to the VOWA 1st Place $250 and 2nd Place $100 prizes regularly given for best entries.  The lucky winner of this special new award could be the first or second place entry or another entry.
The theme for this year’s contest is to write about a memorable outdoor experience or special interest.  The competition is open to any undergraduate student enrolled at a Virginia college or university, including two-year community colleges, public, and private post-secondary institutions, or to students who are Virginia residents attending similar out of state schools.
The winners will be introduced at our March 2013 Annual Meeting in Staunton VA. In addition to the publication of the special award winning essay in Cooperative Living, winning entries will be placed on the VOWA website, and selected quality entries published in DGIF’s The Outdoor Report (ODR).  Rewarding excellence is our goal!

We invite you to our newly upgraded website, www.vowa.org, for complete contest details, description of our generous cash prizes/publication possibilities, and a display of last years winners.  A flyer with Competition Description and Rules/Submission Form is also attached with this email.

Big plans are in the works for the winners at VOWA’s annual meeting, to be held in Staunton Virginia March 2013. This is a very special opportunity for students to showcase their writing talents before many of the best outdoor writers from Virginia and surrounding states.

If you have any questions about the competition you may contact, Marie or Milan Majarov at marie.milan@majarov.com or (540) 336-8728. We will be glad to help you. Your support is very much appreciated.
