Sequencing Analytics Summer Internship at the New York Genome Center

The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, non-profit organization that leverages the collaborative resources of leading academic medical centers, research universities, and commercial organizations. Our vision is to transform medical research and clinical care in New York and beyond through the creation of one of the largest genomics facilities in North America, integrating sequencing, bioinformatics, and data management, as well as performing cutting-edge genomics research.

The Sequencing Analytics team works closely with sequencing operations, bioinformatics, and software engineering to troubleshoot DNA/RNA library prep and sequencing-related issues, and to develop and implement quality control (QC) and analytical tools for the investigative analysis of next generation sequencing (NGS) data. We are looking for an intern with strong laboratory and analytical skills, and a general understanding of genomics to work on assessing the effects of DNA library insert size on sequencing efficiency and data quality. The intern will get hands-on experience in manual and automated sample library prep, and high-throughput sequencing on Illumina HiSeq X platform. The duration of this internship is 10 weeks, beginning June 6th, 2016.

Job Responsibilities
  • Design and perform a DNA library prep experiment to analyze the effects of insert size range on library yield and sequencing.
  • Evaluate results of the above experiment and provide recommendations for optimal insert size range to maximize final library yield and sequencing data.
  • Contribute to the interpretation of sequencing and bioinformatics QC metrics, troubleshooting, and support of process optimization.

Position Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, or related field.
  • Knowledge of molecular biology equipment and related protocols (including DNA extraction, quantification, hybridization, PCR).
  • Familiarity with standard NGS laboratory and bioinformatics workflow is a plus.
  • Strong creative thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, detail oriented, and highly motivated.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team is essential.
