Intern - Center for Molecular Science at SRI International, Harrisonburg

The Biosciences Division at SRI International has openings for Summer Interns in the Center for Macromolecular Bioscience in Harrisonburg, VA.

We seek highly motivated students with interests in biochemistry, chemical biology, cancer biology or a related field. The person should be driven to contribute intellectually in a dynamic team environment and have a desire to participate in therapeutic discovery efforts.

The Intern will be asked to:

  • Participate in active research programs in molecular design, drug discovery and delivery, biologic therapies, and cancer biology.  The student will be trained in a wide variety of laboratory techniques such as peptide synthesis and purification, microscopy, flow cytometry, mammalian cell culture, mass spectrometry and routine biochemical techniques.
  • Collaborate with scientists from other disciplines (e.g., chemistry, molecular biology, cancer biology, and immunology) in cross-divisional teams.
  • Keep a detailed laboratory notebook and to present 1-2 seminars summarizing their progress to the group. Student associates will write and submit a final report on their project and its significance.
  • Complete necessary training classes and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Learn and abide by SRI’s intellectual property guidelines.


Qualifications

  • We encourage applicants with strong laboratory or independent research experience and a broad understanding of the latest in biomedical sciences.
  • Course curricula should include general/organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, biotechnology, and/or immunology.
  • Laboratory experience in biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular biology is required.
  • The successful applicant must be working toward completion of a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering or a similar discipline.
  • Experience with mammalian tissue culture, DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, protein biochemistry, protein expression and purification, and receptor or enzyme activity assays is preferred but not required.
  • Experience in chemical synthesis and analytical techniques is beneficial.


Post-offer, pre-laboratory physical examination may be required.
